Secret Keyboard Shortcuts



Each iPad, iPod and iPad allows you to customize the way the keyboard works. Disable Proactive Assistant: If you don't want Siri to suggest apps, people, locations, and more when you use the new Spotlight Search, you can always disable Siri Suggestions (in Settings > Siri and Search > Suggestions in search). When Apple announced a smaller iPad Pro, I knew this would be a much better fit for me. I also decided to give the Smart Keyboard another try.

Enter the desired full phrase ("MacBook Pro 2016 with Touch Bar" might be a good one for a tech journalist), the shortened version that you want to expand into the longer phrase ("MBP", say), and tap Save. Go to Settings > General, scroll down and tap Keyboard.

Once you get the hang of this feature, you won't need to be reaching your fingers to the top of your screen as often, to tap on a word to move the cursor manually. You can also take a screenshot at the touch of a button and "shake" the iPad without having to pick it up.

The keyboard tracks your fingers movement, making the cursor on the screen smaller and easier to navigate. At the end of a sentence, you can tap the space bar twice in a row and the iPad will output a period, a space and turn the caps key on so that you are ready for the next sentence.

In addition to advanced features like in-keyboard internet searching and on-the-fly language translation (tap the greater-than symbol or the Google icon in the keyboard's upper-left corner if you haven't yet found that stuff), Gboard has a handful of hidden time-saving shortcuts.
